It's hard coming up with new things to do with a toddler. And checking Pinterest for inspiration leaves you drained. Yet more things to buy and an elaborate set-up for something your child may never engage with.
A Year With My Child is here to help.
What is A Year With My Child?
A Year With My Child is a weekly email packed with age-appropriate activities and fun things to do.
Play should be simple
We'll cook, make playdough, do collage and crafts. We'll also look ahead to drawing and writing without ever going near a worksheet. 'Writing' for younger children means finger painting, clothes-peg activities and threading.
There's nothing to buy
You already have everything you need at home. Pots and pans, wooden spoons and wooden blocks.
Give your child the time and space to play and you'll be amazed at what she can do with very little.
It's about exploration and discovery
Creative, resourceful children don't get bored. They are independent self-starters who make their own fun.
Three simple steps
A READYMADE PLAN
The planning is done for you. There’s no need to decide what to do this week: it simply arrives in your inbox. No special resources, no time-consuming set-ups. Just fun and free activities you can enjoy together.
Easy-to-do activities delivered via email in manageable, weekly chunks.
The activities build upon each other until your child has all the skills they need.
School is a long way off. Our focus is on fun and engagement. But the skills we develop, like speaking, listening and fine motor control will help build a solid foundation for later learning.
Praise for Get Set Five
Get Set Five is A Year With My Child's sister course, for preschoolers getting ready to start school. Here are some testimonials from current participants.
"Thanks for this email, the resources page is absolutely brilliant. I've been trying to get into this type of play learning with my kids but haven't known where to start or what age to do these things, and this page has completely cleared it up and made me feel confident. I can't wait for the rest of the course."
"I have found your emails so helpful. It has given me structure and focus to my weeks. As you say, you only need to dip in and out as play and getting out to the woods are so important. Soon it won’t be possible except after school."
"I’m a primary school teacher too (although I haven’t been back for a while whilst raising my own children) and I absolutely love your website and your articles. I only wish I’d discovered you before having children so that my eldest (now 8.5) could have benefitted from it all too."
"I just wanted to say thank you for the 'Get Set Five' emails. When I found out about the course I choked up because it was exactly what I needed but didn't think was out there.
[Even though] I am also a teacher, I am learning so much from each email."
"Thank you for the emails. They are really insightful and are giving me confidence in preparing my son for school next year."

I'm a former Early Years teacher and the founder of One Hundred Toys and Get Set Five. As a father of four, I know how hard it is to find time to create meaningful activities for children.
I love being with my children but I know that it’s good for them to spend time alone, to work things out for themselves. Through A Year With My Child I hope I can show you that being alongside your child - in the same room, but without necessarily engaging all the time - is not an abdication of responsibility. It is one of the greatest gifts you can give. School is still a long way off but it's never too soon to become an independent learner with a can-do attitude .
I also want to empower you to choose - and eventually create - your own activities. In fact, my ultimate goal is to give you the confidence to leave it to your child. Toddlers learn through play, through exploration and discovery. They need self-initiated and self-directed tasks. Our job as parents is to make this possible.
"I teach parenting groups and have about 350 families in class with me at any given time. I have been giving out your company as a resource for years! Thanks for all the great work!"

12 to 36 months is a wide age range. Will the activities be appropriate for my child?
Each email includes separate activities for one-year-olds and two-year-olds. If your child is in the younger age group, you'll be able to revisit the materials in a year's time and go through them again at the higher level.
Do I have to do all the activities?
No! Complete the course at a pace that suits you. It's OK to skip or repeat weeks. Our aim is to build confidence and have fun.
Do I need to buy anything else?
You already have everything you need at home. Most of it is in your kitchen cupboards and craft tray. I assume that you've got some blocks, a ball and a couple of figures or dolls, but that's it. The themes we'll explore are timeless. Toys come and go. The way children learn doesn't change.
